The two neighboring towns of Minden and Gardnerville had very different origins but over the years grew together as the population centers of the Carson Valley farming, ranching and business communities. Nowadays, driving south on Hwy 395, the only transition you will see is the Welcome to Gardnerville or Welcome to Minden sign by the road side.

Gardnerville was named after John Gardner, a cattle rancher and was the focus of the ranching and farming community during the late part of the 19th century. It was also the center for the many Basque sheepherders who arrived in Carson Valley to tend the flocks and to establish the hotels and other businesses for their community, many of which are still in business today.

Dangberg’s home town in Germany and continuing on to become a terminus for the Virginia and Truckee Railway and then the Douglas County seat. Over the years it developed a main street with a bank, hotel, Community Hall and neighborhood businesses, while retaining it’s small American town atmosphere.

Today, Minden and Gardnerville remain peaceful places to live,  with the advantages of controlled development of business and housing, offering a wide choice of lifestyle and outdoor recreation in the glorious surroundings that make up Carson Valley.
